In a major move to regulate the surge of synthetic content, Apple Music has announced it will require record labels and distributors to use “transparency tags” to identify songs and artwork created using Artificial Intelligence.
A Necessary Step for Industry Clarity
The tech giant’s latest initiative aims to provide clear disclosure as platforms like Suno and Udio flood streaming services with millions of AI-generated tracks. According to reports from Billboard, these tags must be applied whenever a “material portion” of the content—including lyrics, compositions, or visuals—is produced through AI tools.
The transparency mandate focuses on four key categories:
- Album Artwork
- Songs
- Music Composition (including lyrics)
- Music Videos
Apple described the move as a foundational step toward providing the industry with the data necessary to develop thoughtful, long-term AI policies.
Competing with the «AI Slop»
The explosion of AI-generated music has become a point of contention for human creators. Platforms like Suno are reportedly generating the equivalent of Spotify’s entire catalog every two weeks. This massive volume, often referred to as “AI slop,” threatens to dilute royalty pools for traditional artists.
Other streaming leaders are also taking action:
- Spotify: Recently implemented filters to remove spam and unauthorized AI voice clones.
- Deezer: Deployed a detection tool in early 2025, revealing that nearly 39% of its daily uploads are now AI-generated.
Legal Battles and New Partnerships
While artists’ rights groups have launched campaigns such as «Say No to Suno,» accusing AI firms of scraping copyrighted cultural output, some major players are choosing collaboration over litigation. For instance, Warner Music Group recently settled its dispute with Suno to establish a partnership focused on developing ethical AI models.
By leaving the final determination of what qualifies as «AI-generated» to the labels, Apple is placing the responsibility of honesty directly on the distributors, signaling a new era of accountability in the digital music landscape.
